Wikipedia has been around for a long time, but it is an absolutely essential resource. Wikipedia is a free open dictionary written using the Wiki concept. Users write all the content. With over 1.1 million entries and counting, the English version of Wikipedia is huge, and there are a number of versions in other languages. You’d have to try hard to think of a topic that is not covered in detail. The open nature of the project, anyone can write anything is contraversial. The project relies on users to edit and make changes in articles to constantly refine them. There is no stringent review process, and purist don’t like the fact that everyday folks are hacking out articles on complex and sometimes contraversial topics. In addition, there is often more than one right answer and people disagree on what is fact and what is fiction.
Even with some of the challenges of a user written Encyclopedia, Wikipedia is a profounding important site bringing a big part of human knowledge to anyone with an Internet connection, all for free. Next time try Wikipedia first, then a search engine when knowledge is what you seek.
