In an effort to show a more consumer friendly face, the movie industry will relax controls over copying downloaded movies to DVDs. This is a critical, if somewhat clunky, step forward in making it easier for users to watch movies on their TVs that they have downloaded on the Internet. Until know it hasn’t been (easily) possible for users to burn their legally downloaded videos to DVDs to watch them on their TVs. Consumers have been forced to watch downloaded movies on only on their computers.
This move by the movie industry has less to do with making friends with consumers and more to do with the fact that making it easier to watch legally downloaded movies may reduce the downloading of pirated copies of movies on P2P networks.
The clunky part of the plan is that consumers will be required to purchase specially produced CSS (Content Scramble System) blank DVDs upon which they will be able to recorded legally downloaded movies from services such as CinemaNow and Movielink.
The DVD Copy Control Association statement is here.
