The Venice Project web site has been available to a small number of beta testers during this past summer. The beta test will expand its number of users until mid November when the site is expected to go live.
Business Week reports that Friis and Zennstrom are negotiating with TV content owners to put their content on the site.
Users will download software (a viewer of sorts) that will turn the computer screen into something like a TV. Friis and Zennstrom claims the player and the legal peer-to-peer backend system will deliver near high definition video.
The Venice Project will also provided the capability for users to upload their own video.
I have often wondered why someone hasn’t done a better job of emulating a TV experience on the web. Of course bandwidth has been and will continue to be the big roadblock, but thus far watching TV on your computer screen has really been nothing like watching your TV. Based on their success with Kazaa and Skype, if anyone can pull this off it will be these two entrepreneurs.
