As promised in a recent post I took Jumpcut online video editing and sharing for a spin today. Jumpcut is one of a new breed of video sharing sites on the web that allow you to not only share your videos but also to edit them online within your web browser.
Uploading videos and pictures is easy and performed flawlessly for me. You can also upload audio clips for your soundtrack. As a big Flickr fan, I appreciate the upload from Flickr option. Jumpcut allows you to make your uploads private or public and to tag your uploads. You can also group your uploads by sets (folders). The maximum size of each upload is 50 MB, and a number of popular file formats are supported.
The editing page was not as intuitive as I expected, but that may be that it is a new process for me. The key editing action buttons are all at the bottom of the screen, and the descriptions for their use could have been more complete. The process of editing a longer clip into smaller portions, called slicing, was not intuitive for me, and took a few minutes to figure out.
Adding titles and captions, and a soundtrack were a snap. Publishing the finished product when your done is as easy as clicking, adding titles, tags, background, and other additional information as appropriate.
Bottom Line
This was my first experience with online video editing, and I was impressed. For extremely basic editing, I found that I had nearly the same experience that I have had with basic desktop video editing tools. This is a big plus for Jumpcut, as the big question was whether they could make it as simple and responsive in a web browser as it is on the desktop. They have made it very easy, and I think the service will have mass market uptake.
There is work to be done though. The placement of key editing tool buttons is not intuitive, and a couple of the buttons do things that you would not expect. For instance, the “Make Movie” button on the upload screen takes you right back to the upload screen. I expected it would take me to the place where I make movies, the editor screen.
In future posts, I will take a look at the other contenders in this space.
