Online video sharing service Guba has implemented a technology that it says will find and flag copyrighted video. The technology is called Johny (after Johny Mnemonic) and was developed by Guba in cooperation with the Motion Picture Association. Guba indicates that it will license the technology to other online video sharing services.
If this really works, it could go a long way in solving the number one problem facing video sharing services - lawsuits against them by copyright holders. At the same time, how many interesting videos will be left on video sites when they are cleansed of South Park and Simpson clips? On the other hand, this technology could make content owners more comfortable in brining their content to the web, knowing that it won’t be intermingled with pirated video.
