Zunemytube is a free open source Microsoft Internet Explorer plugin that allows you to download videos from YouTube and Google Video in a format that can be viewed in Windows Media Player, Zune, Creative Zen, Archos, and iRiver players.

Available at Sourceforge, this little plugin works like a charm and comes without any spyware or adware.

Here is the author’s introduction to ZuneMyTube:

“This is the first version of ZuneMyTube that allows an end-user to download and save YouTube and Google Video videos in a WMV format. It installs an Internet Explorer plugin that adds the “Zune icon” to Internet Explorer’s toolbar (top right). For some users, if the toolbar is “locked”, it will appear in the drop down menu at the top right portion of the toolbar. When you watch a video on YouTube or Google Video, just click on the Zune icon. It will download the video to “My Documents\My Videos\YouTube” and “My Documents\My Videos\Google Video” directory and transcode it to the .WMV format. This file can be played back by Windows Media Player, Zune player. If you select the My Videos and its subdirectories for synch’ing to your Zune or PlayForSure video player, it will be available to you on the portable player.

Feeble. Their own support forum is full of people stating it doesn’t work. The programmer is just harnessing together some conmverters and capturing the stream in a file, and it works for his own very specific combination of hardware and software, and a few others. It’s a classic example of someone posting their crap on the net as a solution before they know how to code.
