Darren Rowse over at ProBlogger runs “Group Writing Projects” from time to time and encourages bloggers to write on specific topics. This time the topic is “Lists”, any kind of list on any subject. In response I have put together a short list of interesting destinations on the web that are using video in different ways.
Everyone is familiar with YouTube and Google Video, but there are other video oriented sites on the web offering more than just stupid pet tricks and pirated Simpson’s clips. Here are five of my favorites.
1. Moving Images
Internet Archives video repository, Moving Images, houses thousands of interesting video clips, TV shows, and movies in categories ranging from old Drive-In Movie Ads to Universal Newsreels to German Cinema and much more. My favorites are the Merrie Melodies cartoons from the 1940’s.
2. TasteTV
If you would like a taste of what the marriage of web and video should be, you absolutely need to take a look at TasteTV. This site really leverages the value of video on the net. TasteTV offers video restaurant reviews, wine education, a chocolate channel, cooking videos and more. All of it served up in real style.
3. WIM
WIM (Wild International Mainstream) is a music video site with the tag line, “100’s of Videos You’ve Never Seen.” They collect new and interesting music videos from around the world. The site is well designed and lives up to its promise of widening your music video horizons well beyond Britney and Eminem.
4. John’s List
ohn’s list of Free Movies, Documentaries, Cartoons, and Music is a collection of links from video sharing services around the web to mostly older and obscure video. John claims most of it is old enough to be out of copyright, but clearly not all of the content is in the public domain. Where else can you watch the film classic, “The Wild Women of Wongo” on the Net?
5. In2TV
If you are hankering for cheesy sitcoms from the more recent past, AOL’s In2TV site is the place to go. Do you remember “Chico and the Man”, “Growing Pains”, “Wonder Woman”, and “Welcome Back Kotter?
