Just a week after I first heard the the term “Webisode” (TV-like episodes delivered via broadband Internet), the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences is making programming delivered over broadband eligible for its Emmy Awards beginning in 2007.

The addition of Webisodes as a category by the Academy adds broadband Internet as a recognized distribution channel for television along with broadcast, cable, and satellite. Although the Academy has not released the details, they did say that drama series, reality shows, sitcoms and other video programs designed specifically for websites may seek to compete in all 27 prime-time categories.

This move by the Academy adds credibility to broadband as a video distribution channel and will most likely speed the development of TV-like content for the web by ISP’s (Internet Service Providers) and the networks. This should be scaring the pants on the traditional (cable, broadcast, and satellite) companies. They have been trying for years to make on demand video mainstream with somewhat limited success. Without much effort and even less hype, the Internet is sneaking up on them. It looks less like convergence of TV and Internet (IPTV) and more like IPS’s in the driver’s seat.
